to improve patient care, operating efficiency at nation’s premier trauma center

Kansas City, MO and Baltimore, MD December 6, 1999 Cerner Corporation (NASDAQ: CERN) announced today that the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center has replaced its existing information management systems with Cerner’s HNA Millennium FirstNet emergency medicine information system.

The University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, the nation’s leader in life-saving care for patients with severe, traumatic injuries, will use Cerner’s information technology and knowledge management solutions to enhance patient care while improving the operational efficiency of the 112-bed emergency facility. Shock Trauma is part of the 724-bed University of Maryland Medical Center, a major teaching hospital in Baltimore.

“The implementation of Cerner’s HNA Millennium FirstNet system went very smoothly, especially since we accomplished it in a short, seven-month time frame. It was an excellent team effort,” says Michael Balassone, Chief Information Officer for the University of Maryland Medical System.

“We were able to convert to the new system without interruption of patient care,” says Joyce Maslyk, Director of Patient Care Services at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.  “Our clinical and operational staff will use the system to easily track patients, upgrade order entry and clinical documentation, generate essential management reports, and provide dynamic real-time clinical decision support.”

Cerner is very excited that the nation’s premier emergency trauma center put its trust in HNA Millennium FirstNet to replace the information management system it developed over the last fifteen years,” said Neal Patterson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cerner.  “We believe FirstNet’s robust functionality will be a fundamental element of the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center showcase of the best practices in emergency trauma care.”

“We are proud of our application, and the many aspects of patient care the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center is supporting with FirstNet,” concluded Francie McNair, Cerner Corporation’s Vice President and Managing Director of the HNA Millennium FirstNet emergency medicine information system.  “As the use of technology to enhance the quality of care and the quality of life for both patients and staff in emergency care situations expands, the stability and flexibility of FirstNet, combined with what some have called a ‘perfect implementation,’ are ideally suited for this world-class institution.”
